Fraternity of Charles de Foucauld (FCF)

Contacts

In a world which sometimes seems to us to have no meaning we wish to follow Jesus as the unique model in a religious life which draws its inspiration from Charles de Foucauld. We are thus called to draw near to 'simple' people, poor or marginalised, to share their conditions of life.

Three pillars

With the intention of building up the Kingdom of God, our lives an Little Brothers of the Gospel are founded on three Pillars, i.e.:

Prayer

Through prayer we try to be always united with God who is the source of our being and who gives meaning to our lives and our actions. Every day we set aside time to read and meditate on the Word of God and time for private and communal prayer.
In our fraternities the Eucharist is at the heart of this prayer. We can thus be united with the Passover of Christ and all the days' work, suffering, prayer and love are transformed into grace.

We regularly spend periods of retreat and solitude in hermitages. Far from cutting us off from other people these times of desert bring us nearer to them for they bring us closer to God and improve our capacity for love.

Fraternity Life

The fraternal love which enlivens communal life must create a real friendship among the brothers. Our fraternal life aims to be a living sign of the Gospel, of the actual reality of the Father's love. It changes us into brothers and allows us to leave behind the individualism which does so much damage nowadays.

Every part of our lives, the way of life of every brother and the needs of the people who surround us, come together in a communal plan. From time to time by means of a review of life, we evaluate tins plan and renew our loyalty to the values of our vocation.

Sharing the life of the poor

The life of Jesus of Nazareth, the mystery of his lowering himself to share the life of humanity had an amazing effect on Charles de Foucauld which was evident in the whole of his life. It calls us to share the life of the poor, their friendship and to be part of their fight against despair and injustice and to enhance their dignify as human beings.

In the diverse ways of life of the fraternities, this BEING WITH may become a simple presence, among people who surround us, commitment to the liberation of humanity and/or the proclamation of the Word of God.

Our life

We live in small fraternities of three or four people, marked by simplicity, trying to live out a number of values which are expressed concretely in daily life, in prayer, in fraternity relations and in sharing with the poor.

This is a life enlivened by:

A Spirit of contemplation

Eager to live lives waiting on God and to welcome him whom he knocks on the door, our lives are above all a way of contemplation and prayer is the very heart of the world..

In our day to day lives, the prayer, times of silence, the communion among brothers and sharing the lives of the poor, all merge and make a whole; different facets of the one love for the humble carpenter of Nazareth.

Our way of life is distinguished by a love of simplicity and littleness, a spirit which is open and welcoming to all and which is looking for our common humanity in relation to others

An apostolic spirit

Eager to share the Good News of Jesus, we feel called, like Charles de Foucauld, to cry the Gospel from the roof tops by the witness of our lives, our daily work and our relations with others.

Dedicated to the proclamation of the Good News to the poor, we share the Church's mission of evangelisation according to our own particular charism.

Our fraternities make themselves available to their local church, with a view to:
- Be a witness to the Kingdom of God;

- Suggest ways of reconciliation and in this way to work for the unity of all humankind;

- To proclaim the Gospel of Christ so that everyone can freely respond to it and receive the sacraments of salvation.

In the many and varied demands and tasks we live evangelisation according to our own individual talents. Our fraternity consists of brothers who are priests arid lay brothers.

Manuel work

The people among whom we live earn their living in lowly occupations. In communion with them and in imitation of Jesus, the poor working man from Nazareth, we earn our living by manual labour.

This sharing in the conditions of workers with its troubles and difficulties helps us to be close to the poor so that their aspirations and just claims become ours too.

When some of us, for various reasons, are unable to earn our living by manual work, it is important to them to lead a simple life close to the poor.

Where do we live

Coming from some twenty or so different countries, we live in fraternities scattered across various countries of Europe, Africa, America and Asia.
